Hi all, at school this term we have to do a blog post on a famous person born in Adelaide so I chose to do it on Andrew Thomas, the first Australian-born astronaut to fly in space.
.
Andy Thomas was born in Adelaide on the 18th of December 1951. He moved to the USA so he could become a NASA astronaut. He is married to another astronaut, Shannon Walker.
In childhood he loved the stars and space. He spent his primary school years at St Andrews and then progressed to St Peters for high school before heading on to The University of Adelaide where he received his bachelor degree in mechanical engineering. After that he accepted an offer from Lockheed in Atlanta and a few years later he was an organizations principal of aerodynamic scientist. He continued in the field, soon getting a promotion to senior researcher.
A few years later he was chosen by NASA and was then made his debut mission later that year. Following a year of training, he was appointed as a part of the astronaut group and qualified for space flights as payload commander for STS-77. He joined the Astronaut support person group (ASP) before finally getting a chance to fly in space. Although Paul D. Scully-Power had entered orbit as an oceanographer in 1985, Thomas was the first Australia-born professional astronaut to enter space.
Soon after, he did more training in Russia, preparing for a long-duration flight in space. It came in 1998 where he served as Board Engineer 2 aboard the Russian Space Station Mir for 130 days! He didn’t do any more flights in space for a few years but from August 2001 to November 2003, Thomas did serve as Deputy Chief of the Astronaut Office. He then flew his final flight in space on STS-114.
Thomas has flown in many missions including STS-77, STS-89, Mir, STS-91,STS-102, STS-114 and has made a huge difference in the Space Shuttle Main Engine project, the Solid Rocket Motor project and the External Tank project at the Marshall Space Flight Centre. He has travelled over 1200000 kilometres and orbited earth 2500 times. He has logged over 177 days in space! He is currently working issues for the Exploration Branch of the Astronaut Office. He has made a huge difference in NASA and around the world, showing everyone, everywhere that if you put your head to something and try hard, you can do great things.
